Steve - Operating System is a matter of personal preference. My main work machine is also my main gaming machine, and I've been using Windows all my life. I might at some point switch my laptop to Ubuntu (not using Xfce - I personally like Gnome, but again that's a matter of preference) - but I can only do that when I can afford the dip in productivity from switching to a less familiar environment. The only non-trivial disadvantage to using Windows over a Linux distro for my line of work is it's a bit more of a hassle setting up things like PEAR (covered in a future instalment).

Outrageous even contemplating being a programmer running on windows. its actually laughable.
Use ubuntu 11.10 running on the XFCE desktop environment, get komodo edit desktop, install a LAMP stack, get firefox with the firebug addon aswell as safari and chrome. install virtual box with windows 7 in it (for testing on IE) and your all set. great setup.as for file storage, get a NAS server, link your apache config to a www directory on the server, then you have access to everything from everywhere in the world through a ssh tunnel or ftp or http.

Awesome stuff. Love the idea of caching with WP transients to cut down on the HTTP requests.

That's a damn good point, Rob. The documentation refers to all entries for a single host being specified on a single line, including all aliases - which, as far as name-based virtual hosts are concerned, is the same thing.

I'd definitely advise using a single line in production, but I'm thinking the multi-line configuration is a touch more readable in dev. Suppose it's a matter of preference.

One thing to note about the vhosts is that you may get a slow lookup if you have the same IP on multiple lines, as this can confuse the DNS. The very first time I setup a vhost there was a pause of around 5 reconds while the entry was being looked up by the internal DNS. So instead of

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 theinterweb
127.0.0.1 website.local

have:

127.0.0.1 localhost theinterweb website.local

Basically, keep one IP, per line and don't repeat :)

A little of Column A, little of Column B. The original plugin I used has been abandoned. I spoke briefly to the maintainer about it, and I'll be launching a fork shortly based on my hacking of his original code.

A bit off topic and out of pure 'noseyness', are you using a Wordpress plugin to automatically catch known acronymns or is it something you've written yourself?
